That was the final nail in the coffin.
If my colleagues view me as a “hired gun”, I’ve been playing other people’s music for too long.
I have a feeling I will remember 2015 as a transformation year for years to come.
When it started, I was a happy little caterpillar, crawling about the garden, munching on its abundant green delights!
As it progressed… I had separated from my significant other after 9.5 years (which at the age of 29, meant the best third of my life), grew weary and sick of working for others, and decided to leave my home country behind. I grew into a frustrated, angry cocoon, and decided to do something useful with all that energy.
So before I pack my bags and turn the studio lights off for the last time, I knew I had to do it...
After over 12 years in the recording industry, it was time for me to finally record a debut album!
Screening the songs was tedious work… I put them to the ultimate test – stripped bare their arrangements and recorded them with just a guitar. Any songs that didn’t work in that context were left out.
I eventually narrowed down the list to 11 songs (having started out with well over 150 drafts!), and I couldn’t be happier with them!
Are they the absolute best music I ever composed?
Probably not, but they don’t need to be.
They are the perfect soundtrack for my life at the moment, songs of departure, wanderlust, freedom and longing.
About roads and open spaces, regrets and desires, a kid standing on the platform - watching the last train home leave.
Now something is happening to me that hasn’t happened in a while… I’m actually excited about recording music!
That child-like excitement you get when you know something is going to be THE BEST, and you can’t wait to get to do it already!!!
After all this time, I’m glad to learn that music can still do that to me :)
Stay tuned for more tales from the studio, and as always – thanks for listening!
