Bright and early on November 6th, 2015.
A few weeks ago, I've reached the point in the album making process where I've done all I can do by myself.
I've crossed all the guitars, bass, resonator, accordion, percussion and Celtic harp off my board - and found myself in a bit of a cooldown.
Since I played most of the playback pieces myself, it was important for me to bring in a friend to do the piano - just to introduce some variety into the texture.
So a session was scheduled with the incredibly talented Jonathan Linav, at Ogen Studios.
Haruvi was there to oversee the sound (along with house engineer Eyal Mahabad), and I was enabled to just relax and enjoy the music :)
It was an amazing feeling to get back to this project, after some time away.
Johnny came prepared, and zipped through the recordings with incredible speed and ease, getting every song just right, and dropping a few wonderful solos!
The piano itself, a Yamaha C3 was a delight to play, with just the right tone - not too classical, but not too jazzy either... a responsive beast with a heart of gold :)
The recording was so beautifully detailed and musical, with as many as 5 mics on the piano at a time, and an extra one recording an actual plate reverb in the adjacent room!
After 11 hours in the studio, the entire album had gorgeous piano tracks - and I couldn't be happier with the results :)
It took a lot of will power to let the project rest over night... The following morning, in the comfort of my own studio - I started incorporating the finalized piano tracks into my projects.
And the difference was unbelievable, the arrangements instantly came to life, full of color and a great sense of space!
This addition was so vital, that it feels like the album is 10 steps closer to finished now.
The next big hurdle for me will be the vocal recordings - which I am looking forward to with a mixture of joy and horror :)
As always, thanks for listening,
